The department of Research and Innovation of the European Commission is responsible for EU policy on research, science, and innovation, with a view to help create growth and jobs, and tackle societal challenges. The three main policy goals: open innovation, open science, and open to the world were set by Commissioner Carlos Moedas in 2015.
The department is in light of the Commission's Work Programme shedding light on aspects concerning the European Green Deal. The aim of the Union is to become the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050 by modernising economy and society, orienting them towards a just and sustainable future. Research and innovation is vital for accelerating and navigating the necessary transaction, deploying, demonstrating, adn de-risking solutions, and further in engaging citizens in social innovation.
